SkinPen by Bellus Medical is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device. It is a device with multiple needles that puncture the skin up to 2.5mm and create controlled micro-injuries. This stimulates your body’s natural wound healing process creating new collagen production, while minimizing cellular damage. The result is effective remodeling of new skin causing smoother texture, improving fine lines and wrinkles. It also improves acne scarring, stretch marks, skin laxity, and hyperpigmentation. A series of 3 treatments spaced 1 months apart followed by a treatment every 3-6 months is recommended. When treating for acne scarring, more treatments may be necessary. When treating for prevention or maintenance, quarterly treatments may be sufficient.

THREE PHASES TO WOUND REPAIR:

• Phase I: Inflammation. Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.
• Phase II: Proliferation. The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.
• Phase III: Remodeling. The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

At your consultation, a Kimiko provider will recommend a course of treatment based on your individual goals such as prevention, maintenance, textural/wrinkle improvement, or acne scarring. On your treatment day, before photos will be taken and a topical numbing agent will be applied prior to your treatment. There is minimal pain. Most patients report feeling only the slight vibration during the procedure.The treatment time varies on the area being treated. A face treatment takes about 45 minutes to an hour. You will be provided with Skinfuse^® LIFT, a clean, non-cytotoxic hydrogel used to prevent the skin from drying out post-treatment.

Immediately post-procedure, the skin will appear slightly pink to red, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn. Dryness, rough skin, tightness, redness, itching, peeling, mild tenderness, and burning are also possible side effects. However, these only last a few days to a week and resolved without any further complications.
